I’ve finally got my hands on Optoma’s new PK101 Pico Projector. As the name suggests it a pocket sized unit that is going to revolutionise the way we share media with our friends, family and colleges. In the box you get the projector itself, an AV cable, with a 2.5mm 4 pole jack at one end and 3 female RCA connectors at the other. Some people have already voiced concern that this only has composite video in, all I can say is give it time, this technology is set to grow very fast in 2009. You also get two 1100mah batteries, which is a good thing as although the stated battery life is 1.5hs, on full brightness you realistically only get about an hour per battery. There is also a USB charger and USB to mini USB charging lead, which could do with being a touch longer. Something I nearly overlooked and which I’m glad I didn’t is the little adaptor that allows you to mount the projector on to any standard tripod plate. On the right hand side you’ve got the AV in, the focusing wheel and the grill for the internal 0.5W speaker, which I might add is far from great. I compare it to the speaker on the 2G iPhone, if there is any sort of background noise you’ll find it nearly impossible to decipher anything. On the left you’ll find the mini charging socket and the power on switch. There are two brightness settings, but I have been hard pushed to find any real difference between the two, hence I find myself using the lower setting just to save on power. The first thing that struck me was just how small this thing really is. It’s incredible to think that they managed to get a fully functioning DLP projector into such a small package! The dimensions are 50 x 103 x 15mm. To get video from you chosen device you’ll most probably need another cable. I tried an aftermarket iPhone AV but had no luck, the genuine Apple one set me back another £30! Onto the important bit! The picture can be focused and any size between 15cm and 150cm and in a completely dark room you get stunning result. The quality of the projected image relies heavily on the source video, this is an H264 mp4 at about 500Kbps and its about 50”. Judge for yourself but I think its pretty amazing! Of course big is not always better, if you want you can have a 15cm screen sat right on your desk, at this distance you can even have the lights on and still get a good result!
